COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A North Adams man was sent to the Michigan Department of Corrections on Monday morning by Branch County Circuit Court Judge Bill O’Grady after he used a stolen gun to threaten another man on July 9, 2021 and then tried to run away from police.
34-year-old Chad Alan Truitt was ordered to serve between 14 months and 10 years in prison after he entered a guilty plea to a charge of receiving and concealing a stolen weapon.
In exchange for his plea, prosecutors dismissed charges of assault with a dangerous weapon, assaulting/resisting/obstructing a police officer and a count of felony firearms.
Truitt was given credit for 248 days served in the Branch County Jail.
According to Branch County Court documents, Truitt threatened a man who had given him a ride from Hastings.
He was spotted by police on East Chicago near the I-69 overpass. Authorities say he tried to run from Coldwater Police and the Michigan State Police but was captured and placed in custody behind Buffalo Wild Wings.
A handgun that Truitt had was later found by a Michigan State Police K-9 along the path he had run. A records check found the gun had been stolen.
