KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Just days before the district says it will announce a decision on its current mask mandate, a middle school teacher has filed a lawsuit against the Kalamazoo Public Schools, arguing the district can’t mandate masks without an order from the health department.
Patricia Tyler is a teacher at Hillside Middle School. Her lawsuit filed Monday in Kalamazoo County Circuit Court also says KPS has not honored a medical mask exemption signed by her doctor.
Amanda Miller, president of the KPS teachers union, told MLive that union members appear to be split on whether they would prefer to see the mandate continue or not.
Kalamazoo Public Schools is the only district in the county still requiring masks in school buildings. District officials have said they will announce a decision on whether or not to continue the mandate at their school board meeting Thursday.
