EAST LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Branch County’s unemployment rate went up in January to four-point-three percent according to data released on Thursday by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget.
Not seasonally adjusted unemployment rates went up in all 17 Michigan labor market areas between December and January while employment levels fell in 16 of the labor market areas.
The report stated annual regional jobless rates in 2021 fell notably in all labor market areas as Michigan continued to experience recalls of laid off workers caused by the COVID-19 pandemic
Associate Director of the Bureau of Labor Market Information and Strategic Initiatives Wayne Rourke said, “Michigan regional labor markets exhibited typical seasonal increases in unemployment
rates in January. January nonfarm job totals also fell seasonally in all Michigan metro areas.”
The report showed Branch County had the 13th lowest unemployment rate among Michigan’s 83 counties after the jobless rate the previous month stood at three-point-nine percent.
January unemployment rates were up in neighboring counties. St. Joseph County had the sixth lowest unemployment rate in the state at three-point-nine percent, Hillsdale County was at five percent while Calhoun County went up to five-point-six percent.
Michigan’s unemployment rate in January was four-point-nine percent.
Unemployment rates ranged from three-point-three percent in Washtenaw County to 17 percent in Mackinac County.
