COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In Branch County high school sports, last night in girls soccer, Coldwater fell at home to Jackson Northwest 1-0. The Lady Cardinals lost the Interstate Eight Conference match despite outshooting Northwest 20-4. The lone goal of the night came for the Mounties with 12:37 to play in the first half off a corner kick. The defeat dropped Coldwater’s record to 7-5-2 overall and 0-4 in the I-8. They return to conference action tomorrow at Jackson Lumen Christi.
In yesterday’s JV action in Coldwater, the Lady Cardinals played to a scoreless tie with Northwest.
Also in soccer last night, Quincy was a winner on the road, beating Jackson Christian 4-2. The visiting Orioles led 2-1 at halftime on two goals from Liz Counterman with Cailyn Hines assisting on both scores. Quincy struck quickly after the break as Hines found the net just 34 seconds into the second half off a breakaway from a throw in by Gaby Masson. The Orioles later went ahead 4-1 when Counterman made it a hat trick with her third goal of the night off a throw-in from Ally Parrish. Jackson Christian then scored on a corner kick to cut the deficit to 4-2 but Quincy held the host Royals in check over the final 12-and-a-half minutes of the match to secure the league victory. Haley Askew had 12 saves in goal for the Orioles including stopping a penalty kick. Quincy improved to 4-2 in the ISL and is now 6-6-and-1 overall. The Orioles next match is Thursday night at home against Springport.
Yesterday in girls tennis, Coldwater scored an 8-0 victory at home over Charlotte. First, second, third, and fourth singles winners were Emma Grife, Emma Dwyer, Karissa Harrell and Samantha Youse. The first doubles winners were Allie Vanstone and Gabriel Boston, at second doubles, Aubrey Hodson and Alyssa Bowen, at third doubles, Allison Eastmead and Kayle Riley and at 4th doubles, Emily Hicks and Brooke Lafferty. On Friday, Coldwater will compete in the Interstate Eight Conference tournament hosted by Parma Western.
Yesterday in junior varsity baseball, Coldwater swept a doubleheader at Prairie Heights 17-1 and 10-3. Austin Butler and Mitch Duda were the winning pitchers. Kameron Miller had two singles in the opener while in the second game, Calab Letendre had a double and 2 singles. In freshman baseball, Coldwater swept a doubleheader at home over Athens 12-10 and 13-4. The winning pitchers were Alex Everett and Oliver Winter. In the first game, Lucas Santure had two hits and 2 RBI’s while Cody Nill also had two hits with an RBI. In game two, Santure and Blake Yates each had two hits and an RBI.
Monday in JV softball, Coldwater dropped a doubleheader at Prairie Heights 5-4 and 19-10. The losing pitchers were Izzy Foley and Emma Stanley. In the opener, Sydney Simpson had 2 singles while in the second game, Foley had a triple and two doubles with an RBI.
On today’s high school schedule, in baseball and softball, it’s Coldwater at Jackson Lumen Christi, Quincy at Union City, and Bronson at Mendon. In track, it’s Coldwater at Pennfield and Quincy at Springport. In Boys golf, it’s Coldwater at the Onsted Invitational. And in Girls tennis, Coldwater is at Sturgis while Bronson hosts Buchanan.
