COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In high school baseball Tuesday, it was a split at home for Coldwater against Comstock with the Cardinals winning the opener 10-6 before Comstock took the nightcap 10-3. The Coldwater victory featured a 13-hit attack with Jordan Butler going 3-for-3 including a double with an RBI and 3 runs scored. Brandon Lewis, Brendan Spangler, Brayton Rzepka and Austin Krzeminski had 2 hits apiece. Krzeminski had a triple with 3 RBI’s while Spangler had a solo home run. Morgan Sims was the winning pitcher in relief of Nicholas Straw. Sims went 3-and-a-third innings, allowing only one hit with no walks and 4 strikeouts and he was our McDonald’s Player of the Game.
The Coldwater defense suffered a letdown in game two with 10 errors compared to only two in the first game. Addison Duda was the starter and loser for the Cardinals in the nightcap but none of the 4 runs he allowed were earned in his two innings on the mound. Coldwater was held to just 3 hits, including a 2-run homer by Spangler, who was our pick for McDonald’s Player of the Game for the nightcap. The Cardinals will take a 5-and-2 record into their Interstate Eight Conference opener at home tomorrow against Marshall and we’ll again have it for you on the radio, joining the doubleheader in progress with our live coverage beginning around 5:30 p.m. following the Evening Journal.
Coldwater swept the junior varsity doubleheader yesterday at Comstock 6-3 and 11-1. The winning pitchers were Cameron Barnes and Eric Bach with a save for Mitch Duda in the opener. In game one, Collin Torrey had 2 doubles while Calab Letendre had a double and a triple. In the second game, Austin Butler had 2 hits while Cam Miller had a double and 2 RBI’s.
Also in baseball yesterday, it was a split for Quincy at home in their Big Eight Conference opener against Springport. The host Orioles won the first game 7-1 on a 4-hitter for Tyler Powell, who also had 10 strikeouts. Hunter Haylett had a hit with 2 RBI’s. Quincy was shutout 3-0 in the nightcap with the Orioles limited to 3-hits. Jake Rider went the distance and suffered the loss on a 5-hitter. Quincy’s overall record is now 6-2.
Also in the Big 8, Union City lost 10-0 at Concord where the second game was suspended in the ninth inning with the score at 3-3. Darren Austin suffered the defeat in the opener for the Chargers with their record slipping to 1-5.
In the BCS East, Bronson began conference play with a doubleheader loss at home to Centreville 5-4 and 7-0. Daniel McMichael went the distance in game one with a 5-hitter and 9 strikeouts. Philip Mandoka and Noah Roberts each had two hits, including a double and an RBI and Ethan Cossairt added two hits. Tyler Roussey was the losing pitcher in game two. The Vikings’ record drops to 1-and-7.
In softball yesterday, Quincy picked up their first two wins of the season while opening Big 8 play at home in sweeping a pair from Springport, taking both games 17-2. The winning pitchers were Hannah Economou and Kaylin Oliver. In the opener, Economou had a 2-hitter with 7 strikeouts and she also had 3 RBI’s. Kaydee Swafford added a double and 3 RBI’s. In the second game, Economou had 2 hits and 4 RBI’s while Oliver had 2 hits with a double and 3 RBI’s. Zoe Aseltine had 3 hits for the Orioles, who improved their record to 2-and-6.
Union City dropped a doubleheader at Concord 7-1 and 10-6. Hailey Rivard went the distance in both losses. Skyler Herman had a total of 5 hits in the twin bill with 2 RBI’s. Riley Smith had 3 hits and an RBI in the second game. Rivard also had two hits and an RBI in game two.
Bronson swept a softball doubleheader at home to open conference play, beating Centreville 10-0 and 14-0. Skyler Sobeski and Adyson Lasky were the winning pitchers in the two five inning contests. Sobeski had a 2 hitter with a dozen strikeouts and she helped her own cause with a home run, a double, and 5 RBI’s. Kinslea Blouin had a single, double, and a home run and 3 RBI’s and she continued the hot hitting in the nightcap with 2 triples and a single and 7 RBI’s. Bronson’s overall record is now 6-1.
In boys track yesterday, Coldwater was a winner at Jackson Northwest 103.5 to 59.5. Logan Targgart took first place in the shot put and discus and in the process broke his own school record in the shot put with a toss of 57-feet, one inch. Blaze Watson won the pole vault with a season best effort as well as finishing first in a hurdles race. Matt Sowles won the mile, Spencer Leist the two mile, and Zach Murphy the 800 meter run.
In girls tennis, Coldwater lost at home 5-3 to Marshall. Emma Grife took first singles while Allie Vanstone and Sadie Youse won at first doubles with fourth doubles going to the team of Emily Hicks and Brooke Lafferty.
The Coldwater JV girls tennis team won their match against Marshall Tuesday evening 4-3.Singles match winners were Gaby Boston, Merlyn Johnson, and Emily Folk, while the doubles team of Hannah Johnson and Kaylee Rily won by forfiet.
On today’s high school sports schedule, in Boys golf, Coldwater begins Interstate Eight play, hosting the first Jamboree of the season at the Coldwater Golf Course. And in track, it’s Quincy at Jonesville while Union City hosts Reading and Springport. Also, it’s Bronson at Centreville.
