COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In Branch County high school sports, last night in girls soccer, in a matchup of county rivals, Coldwater beat visiting Quincy 1-0. The Cardinal’s third straight victory over the Orioles keeps the traveling trophy in the series in Coldwater after the third annual “Battle of the Birds”. It was a scoreless first half last night and then Megan Hoath connected for the only goal of the game 26 seconds into the 2nd half, assisted by Madison Marsh. Coldwater outshot Quincy 14-3, including 9-0 in the second half. Shelby Bowers had 3 saves in goal in the Cardinal’s 3rd shutout of the year. Coldwater improved its record to 3-1 while Quincy slipped to 1-1-and-1. Both teams are off now until Monday April 13th following Spring Break week.
Yesterday in baseball, Quincy swept a doubleheader at Addison, winning the pair of five-inning games 14-2 and 8-6. In the opener, Jake Rider went the distance with a 2-hitter with 11 strikeouts and 2 walks. He also helped his own cause with a double and triple and 3 rbi’s. Noah Winans also had two hits and 2 rbi’s. In the nightcap, Hunter Haylett picked up the victory in relief while Josh Clark earned the save and also had a 2-run single. Rider added 2 hits and an rbi as Quincy improved to 4-0.
Bronson split a doubleheader at Prairie Heights, Indiana, losing the opener 4-1 before taking the nightcap 3-1. Cody Bennett picked up the victory for Bronson in the second game with a save for Daniel McMichael. Tyler Roussey had 3 hits including a double with an rbi while McMichael and Ethan Cossairt each had two hits with an rbi. Noah Roberts took the loss for the Vikings in the opener with Bronson’s record on the season now at 1-and-3.
Wednesday in softball, Union City was a 9-7 winner at Colon to improve their record to 1-and-2. Marissa Mead picked up the victory, giving up 7-hits over 7 innings with 6 strikeouts and just one walk. She also scored twice with 2 rbi’s and 3 walks. Brenna Johnson added an rbi triple.
It was a busy day Wednesday in track. Quincy’s boys and girls teams lost at Sand Creek. The Orioles dropped the Boys meet 81-56. Tanner Parshall was a triple winner for Quincy in the 100, 200, and 400 meter dashes while Bryce Ruhl won the long jump and high jump. Sand Creek won the girls meet 83-54. Kayti Hawkins won the discus and high jump for Quincy.
Also in track, Bronson split at home against Cassopolis with an 80-52 win for the host Vikings in the boys meet while Cassopolis took the girls meet 80-47. Double winners for the Bronson boys were Marcus Broom in the mile and two mile, Wes Disbro in the pole vault and the 880 yard run, and Eric Toledo in the shot put and discus.
And in a tri-meet at Union City, in the boys action, the host Chargers finished second to Battle Creek St. Philip 79-63 while the Union City girls team picked up a victory 74-50 over St. Philip. Both teams from Bellevue finished a distant third. Union City’s double winners for the boys were Aaron Watson in the 100 and 200 meter dashes along with the Charger’s 800 and 16-hundred meter relay teams. For the girls, Rachel Wing won the shot put and discus and Hannah Muckel finished first in the 100 and 200 meter dashes.
In girls tennis yesterday, Bronson earned a 5-3 victory at Battle Creek St. Phillip. Winners for Bronson were Jordyn Fox at fourth singles along with Alana Cranson and Karly Showalter at first doubles. Voids decided the other doubles matches in favor of the Lady Vikings.
The Branch County high school sports schedule, with a couple of limited exceptions next week in baseball and softball, is finished for now until after spring break. Today on the Coaches Corner, it’s Union City sports with a check of the Charger’s spring coaches and rosters.
In middle school sports yesterday, in track, Coldwater competed in a tri-meet at Marshall with the Cardinals winning the girls meet with Marshall second and Charlotte third while the boys team took second place behind Marshall. Samantha Rodesiler was a double winner for the girls in the Long Jump and 400 meter dash.
