COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater School District’s early release for students on Wednesday afternoons that started this fall has worked well, but it can be better. That’s according to school officials who announced at Monday’s meeting of the Coldwater Board of Education that the program in the next school year will be changed from Wednesday to Friday.
Early Release is designed to improve the performance of the pupils and the teachers. Superintendent of School Dr. Tina Kerr said the switch in days should make it easier on the public. Kerr notably mentioned issues that have arisen with Early Release relative to the Kinder Learning Academy, as well as Head Start and the Great Start Readiness Program. Kinder Learning is the preschool program at the Lincoln Learning Center serving 3-year olds in the morning and 4-year old children in the afternoon, Monday through Thursday.
Coldwater students this year have started classes a few minutes earlier and are released a few minutes later every day except Wednesdays. The earlier dismissal midweek has given teachers a chance to meet together to examine student achievement and make necessary adjustments to lessons, using the time as well to plan extra assistance for struggling students and create more learning opportunities for those who have mastered the basic materials.
