QUINCY, MI (WTVB) – In Branch County high school sports, Quincy opened its girls soccer season yesterday with a 4-2 win at Olivet. The first score came 2-and-a-half minutes into the match as Quincy jumped out to an early lead on a goal by Liz Counterman with an assist from Anjelica Sussex. Then at the 15:48 mark Caiylin Cook found the back of the net off a perfect cross in front of the goal from Caiylin Hines. Mackenzie Moore then rounded out the scoring before the break with a goal on another cross from Hines at 11:24 to make it a 3-0 half time lead.
The second half saw the Orioles start strong again as Haley Bean scored at 37:55 off an assist from Sussex. Olivet ended the shutout with a penalty kick at the 26 minute mark and then they scored off a scrum in front of the goal with 6:04 left to make it a 4-2 final score. On the night, Quincy out shot Olivet 15-5 while in goal, Hannah Kaser and Haley Askew shared duties to combine for 3 saves. Quincy’s second match of the season is scheduled for tomorrow night at Sturgis.
In boys basketball, the field is set for the MHSAA Final Four after last night’s state tournament quarterfinals. Tuesday’s March Magic games included Hanover-Horton punching their Class C ticket to the Breslin Center by holding off Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central 50-48 in their Elite Eight contest at Ann Arbor Huron. The victory sends the Comets on to face top-ranked Flint Beecher in the semi-finals tomorrow afternoon with a 24-1 record for both teams.
The only other area team that played last night, Otsego, had their season end with a 69-60 loss to Milan in a Class-B quarterfinal matchup at Marshall.
Today in Branch County high school sports, the track season starts for Quincy and Union City with an indoor meet and the Hillsdale Invitational at Hillsdale College.
