COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Township Sunrise Rotary Club recently donated $10,000 to the Supporters of the Branch County Sheriff’s Office Fund held at the Branch County Community Foundation in support of their recent Drone Project.
Detective Sergeant David Filmore has researched the use of drones at the request of Sheriff John Pollack and has contacted other department’s nationwide to get copies of their policies and procedures.
Filmore says, “With drones being fairly new in law enforcement, we wanted to make sure that they were something that would be beneficial to our community and I believe that they have evolved to the point that they would be a great asset”.
The department is looking to a multi-purpose drone that will accomplish many tasks. The planned uses are for search and rescue, critical incident overwatch, crash and crime scene mapping along with assisting with felony fugitive apprehension.
Coldwater Township Sunrise Rotary President Shari Deevers states, “The Coldwater Township Sunrise Rotary is pleased to present Sheriff John Pollack with a check for $10,000 for the Drone Project. Our Rotarians understand the needs of our community and how much the Drone Project can help Branch County. The Coldwater Township Sunrise Rotary is a club with many community members who give whenever they can and strive to support the community. We are happy to help the Branch County Sheriff’s Department.”
Fillmore adds, “the drones will not be used to “spy “ on people; as their use will be governed by federal law through the FAA along with Michigan law. We plan to be open and transparent with the entire program and are looking forward to engaging with our community so that we can demonstrate the drone’s capabilities and uses and answer any questions asked of us.”
