COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – On a 7-2 vote, the Coldwater City Council approved a proposal Monday night for the exterior painting of the former Putnam Funeral Home building that is owned by the City.
Ever since the City bought the property for $10 in August 2020 from Keystone Michigan, Incorporated, it has completed a number of repairs to the exterior of the building and cleaned up the landscaping around the property in hopes a new use can be found for the structure.
The structure has been vacant since the Putnam Funeral Home closed in the spring of 2017.
City Manager Keith Baker said in his letter to the Council the building was in need of exterior painting. He pointed out the Branch District Library Coldwater branch was also in need of painting and the Branch District Library Board awarded the contract to STP Painting of White Pigeon.
He said if the City would use STP Painting to paint the Putnam building, it would realize a ten percent savings by having the work completed in coordination with the library project.
The painting of the Putnam building would cost the city $35,800 which would bring the amount of money spent on the Putnam’s property up to about $110,000.
Depending on the timing of the actual work, Baker said the project would be split between the FY 2022 and FY 2023 budgets. Emily Rissman and Chad Johnson cast the no votes.
