KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Michigan Democratic Party hosted a press conference and rally in Kalamazoo on Tuesday, April 26 to push back on a Republican plan they say puts both Social Security and Medicare in jeopardy.
Supporters gathered at the Kalamazoo County Democratic Party Headquarters at 3254 South Westnedge Avenue around 12 noon.
Despite the cool and cloudy weather, they banded together to rally against what they say is a plan by the GOP to get Congress to sunset both Social Security and Medicare.
Michigan Democratic Party Spokesperson Alyssa Bradley says the GOP plan would essentially get rid of both programs entirely after five years unless Congress decides to pass them again. This in turn, resulting in higher costs and lower access for those relying on the programs.
In attendance at the rally were Democratic congressional candidate for Michigan’s 4th congressional district, Joseph Alfonso, Kalamazoo County Democratic Party Chair Mariah Phelps, and Huizenga consituent Javier Juarez.
