HILLSDALE (WTVB) – In Branch County high school sports, in Boys basketball, in a championship game we had on the radio last night, a great season by Quincy came to an end as the undefeated Hillsdale Hornets beat the visiting Orioles 77-60 to win the Hillsdale Class C District title. Quincy finished with a 21-2 record while 22-0 Hillsdale advances to next week’s Regional at Adrian Madison. Quincy started strong last night and was on top 26-18 at the end of the first quarter. But by halftime, Hillsdale had surged ahead 39-34 and the Hornets nearly tripled that advantage by the end of the third quarter with a 62-48 lead heading into the final period with the Orioles unable to mount a comeback. Our McDonald’s Player of the Game honors for Quincy went to the Orioles starting five from last night, all seniors, with congratulations to Chase Cook, Jake Rider, Andrew Karney, Nick Haberl, and Jake Jodway. It was Rider who had a team-high 19 points against the Hornets with 12 for Haberl and 11 for Jodway. Just 4 players put up points for Hillsdale but three of them had at least 20 on the night paced by Patrick Drews, who put up a monster double-double with 28 points and 19 rebounds. The Hornets next opponent will be Hanover Horton as the Comets last night at home defeated Vandercook Lake 54-47 to win their 14th straight District title.
In the Coldwater Class B District title game last night, Edwardsburg rallied to stop Sturgis 50-46 with the Trojans failing to stay alive after eliminating Coldwater in the semifinals on Wednesday night. Harper Creek won its own Class B District with a 55-43 decision over Delton-Kellogg. And in Class-D at Athens, the host Indians lost a close one to Mendon, 48-47
