COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The days are numbered for the old Branch County Jail.
Sheriff John Pollack told the Branch County Board of Commissioners during their work session on Thursday that the Sheriff’s Department is looking into an asset disposition company to help move items out of the old jail before it’s demolished.
With a lack of manpower, Pollack said an asset disposition company would save the Sheriff’s Department a lot of work.
Commissioners gave Pollack their okay for him to continue his search.
Pollack also told Commissioners an evacuation and storage barn is needed for large evidence as part of the new jail project after the State Road Commission barns on Michigan Avenue were closed.
Branch County Administrator Bud Norman says the old jail will be torn down before the storage barn and evacuation building is constructed.
The current plans call for the old jail to be demolished sometime this fall or next spring.
The new jail officially opened in October of 2021. Branch County inmates were moved from the old facility into the new jail last December.
