COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Cutting all the red tape for the rezoning and permits needed for the planned $250-million Clemens Pork Production facility is underway with action taken this week by the Coldwater City Planning Commission. Monday night, the Commission voted 7-0 in favor of rezoning 450 acres of property located at 572 Newton Road.
The Clemens request to rezone now moves on to the Coldwater City Council for ordinance introduction on March Ninth. Specifically, the site that is classified Township AG Agricultural and C2 Commerical would be rezoned D-2 Heavy Industrial. Coldwater Assistant City Manager and Community Services Director Keith Baker said there were a number of public comments Monday night from Coldwater Township residents not so much on rezoning but rather relative to the future site plan and the impact the project would have in that area regarding parking, traffic, and landscaping, among other issues.
Clemens expects to break ground for the plant near I-69 north of Coldwater next summer with production and the 800 jobs that come with it beginning in late 2017 or early in 2018.
