The induction of Miranda Robison Lewis into the Coldwater High School Athletic Hall of Fame, along with the re-dedication of the CHS gym in honor of longtime former coach Floyd Eby, wound up being the biggest highlights of a night of high school basketball that we broadcast on the radio, as the host Cardinals were swept in both games by Harper Creek.
The Beaver boys out-rebounded Coldwater 50-33 and led wire-to-wire on their way to a 72-56 win in the nightcap of the hoops twinbill. Collin Warner had a team-high 20 points, while our McDonald’s Player of the Game, junior guard Matt Sowles, had 6 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists. Coldwater’s record drops to 3-13 overall, 2-10 in the Interstate 8.
In the opener of the doubleheader, Harper Creek dominated on both ends of the floor in their 51-28 girls basketball win against Coldwater. Carlee Smoker led the Lady Cards with 7 points and 4 rebounds; our McDonald’s Player of the Game nod went to junior forward Megan Hoath for her overall defensive hustle. Coldwater’s record drops to 6-12 overall, 3-9 in the Interstate 8.
It was also Hall of Fame Night at Quincy High School; former Oriole standouts Richard Sattler, Tim Brewer, Corey Rogers, and Megan Loveberry were honored at halftime of the boys basketball game against Jonesville. The Orioles bounced back nicely from their first loss of the season and claimed a 63-47 win against the Comets. Jake Rider led the team with 19 points, while Nick Haberl and Jake Jodway had 14 points apiece. Haberl added 9 rebounds and Jodway 5 as Quincy improves to 15-1 overall, 10-1 in the Big 8 – back in a tie with Concord atop the league standings after the Yellow Jackets lost in overtime at Homer 60-58.
The girls basketball opener at Quincy saw the Lady O’s fall to Jonesville 43-15. Quincy drops to 1-17 overall, 1-11 in the Big 8.
It was another doubleheader split at Athens, as arch-rival Union City posted a 65-47 win against the Indians in boys basketball behind Darren Austin’s double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds. Lucas Vaccaro added 12 points and 6 boards as the Chargers improve to 14-3 overall, 8-3 in the Big 8.
Athens won the opener of the twinbill against Union City 49-21. Makenna Bartlett had a team-high 10 points as the Chargers drop to 3-15 overall, 1-11 in the Big 8.
Bronson lost a BCS cross-division boys basketball contest against visiting Buchanan 57-51. Jordan Alger led all scorers in a losing effort with 15 points, while Justin Robinson added 14 as the Vikings drop to 6-10.
In girls basketball, BCS East Division champion Bronson traveled to BCS West champ Niles Brandywine in a league crossover contest, and the second-ranked Bobcats improved to 18-1 with their 52-33 triumph against the Lady Vikings. Skyler Sobeski led all scorers with 15 points and 11 rebounds as Bronson drops to 12-5.
Back to boys basketball, Tekonsha lost to Burr Oak 55-38. Connor Jenkins had a team-high 12 points, while Chyene Wiescholek added 10 as the Indians fall to 5-12.
On today’s schedule, there’s MHSAA Individual Wrestling Reginals across the state. Fourteen Branch County wrestlers qualified out of last week’s Individual Districts. Coldwater’s representatives will travel to the Division 2 Eaton Rapids regional, while wrestlers from Bronson, Quincy, and Union City are at the Division 4 Manchester regional.
