UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – The Village of Union City’s Public Works employees unearthed a rare treasure in a barn last week, the 1908 Broadway Street bridge plaque.
The flood of 1908 took out the old bridge which is still laying in the St. Joseph River.
The Village built a brand new bridge and had a large celebration to commemorate the occasion.
The 1908 plaque stands two feet tall and is very heavy and thick.
It lists some Village officials including Charles W Hosmer, Mortimer Vosburg, Leon Johnson, Byron Bray and Loring Wilcox. All are buried in Riverside Cemetery in Union City.
The builders are listed as Wynkoop & McGormley, a Toledo Ohio based bridge company that made a lot of arched style bridges in the area in the early 1900’s.
Village officials plan to hang the plaque at the Village Office.
