STURGIS, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Sturgis Hospital will stay open, at least for now.
During a special meeting on Thursday night, the Sturgis City Commission approved a $645,000 loan to help the hospital stay operational as they await potential state funding.
Hospital officials made the request for the funds on June 15.
According to WWMT-TV, the action came after there was two-and-a-half hours worth of discussion.
Sturgis City Manager Michael Hughes said the loan money would come from the American Rescue Plan Funding.
It’s also helpful that state completed work on its budget on Thursday.
The hospital’s chief financial officer had earlier warned that the loan would only get the facility through July.
State funding would allow the hospital to stay open and become a rural emergency hospital on January 1, 2023. That is when a new law takes effect that allows small hospitals to be recognized as a rural emergency hospital.
