COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Two new full-time positions in the Public Defenders Office which are being funded by the Michigan Indigent Defense Commission were brought forward by the Branch County Board of Commissioners during their work session on Thursday.
There would be no additional financial impact on the county for a Legal Assistant and a Social Worker.
The additions would bring the public defender’s office up to four attorneys, two investigators, a social worker, two legal assistants and an office administrator.
Chief Public Defender Matt Glaser said the third office person has been needed almost from the start.
Glaser said the state has been pushing for a social worker in the public defender’s office.
Formal action by Commissioners on the request is expected to take place next Tuesday afternoon.
