KENT COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kent County Health Department officials are confirming that the West Nile Virus has been detected in mosquitoes in Kent County.
According to a news release dated Tuesday, July 12, the health department said the virus was detected in the city of Wyoming, making it the first time the virus has been found in Michigan this year.
The discovery was made during the ongoing summer tracking by the Kent County Health Department Mosquito Surveillance Team.
Health Officials say that 80% who contract the virus develop no symptoms, with 20% experiencing symptoms such as headache, body aches, joint pains and fatigue.
As there is no vaccine or cure for the virus, they say those who venture outdoors should do their best to take preventative measures such as wearing mosquito repellent containing 10 to 35 percent DEET, wearing light colored clothing, along with removing or refreshing water in bird baths, children’s wading pools, water bowls for pets, and emptying other small containers that can collect water in your yard.
They stress also to stay indoors during dusk to reduce the risk of being bitten.
