UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – The owners of the “Hometown Gazette” have announced the newspaper will shut down after its August 17 edition.
Owners Andrea and Troy Tennyson said in a post on the paper’s Facebook page on Monday that the decision was not an easy one and it came about for a variety of reasons.
They said, “With the pandemic crunching down everyone’s budget, many local establishments were forced to cut back on their advertising, which in turn significantly cut into our revenue stream. In addition to that, several local businesses changed hands over the past few years, while some have closed up shop and left the area entirely, again taking with them a significant source of revenue.”
The Tennysons also said, “the rise of costs across the board have put the Hometown Gazette into a nose dive into the red, the likes of which we can not recover. The cost of printing has skyrocketed, the cost of fuel to deliver papers is at a near all-time high, and the rate of postage to mail newspapers has jumped significantly and continues to go up, all creating a perfect storm of fiscal losses.”
The Hometown Gazette has been covering events in the Union City area for over six years.
