BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – As of Thursday morning, over 51,000 Consumers Energy customers were without power after strong thunderstorms and powerful wind gusts topping 60 mph swept across Michigan Wednesday afternoon.
Nearly 84,000 customers lost power at the height of the storms
Most of the power outages in Branch County were in the Sherwood Township area. Only 33 outages for all of Branch County were reported early Thursday morning.
Over 3,700 outages were reported in Calhoun County while another 8,300 customers were out in Kalamazoo County.
The outage page on the Consumers Energy web site indicate some customers may not get their power back until Friday at the earliest.
“We were prepared for the strong storms to hit our state and had crews in place to begin restoration as soon as it was safe to do so,” said Guy Packard, Consumers Energy’s Officer In Charge for the power restoration work. “We appreciate the patience of our friends and neighbors, and we are committed to working around the clock to get the lights back on for everyone who counts on us as quickly as we can.”
Nearly 150 Consumers Energy and contractor crews are currently working to assess damage and restore power in Genesee, Kalamazoo, Allegan, Barry, Jackson and Calhoun counties.
The utility says restoration times can vary depending on changing weather conditions.
Before the storms hit, the high for Wednesday at the Branch County Memorial Airport was 92 at about 3:00 p.m. with a heat index reading of 105.
