COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Maple Lawn Medical Care Facility and Rehabilitation Administrator Jane Sabaitis told the Branch County Board of Commissioners during their work session on Thursday they are experiencing financial issues that may lead to missed payrolls and unpaid bills.
Her report indicated a domino effect from the COVID-19 pandemic has led Maple Lawn to this situation.
She said they got a notice of a Medicade Interim Payment adjustment from the State of Michigan on June 21.
The reconciliation amount for the last three years came out to over $874,000.
She said they are only at 75 percent occupancy after consistently being at 95 percent before the COVID-19 pandemic.
In addition, Sabaitis said many medical agencies halted unnecessary medical procedures during the pandemic and Maple Lawn has lost a number of employees. According to Sabaitis, revenue is down so far this year by 20 percent after dropping five percent in 2021.
She presented two proposals to Commissioners. One was a short term request of a $1 million advance from the county. The second was a long term request for a 10 year millage question on this November’s ballot that would bring in $1-point-6 million per year.
Commissioner Randall Hazelbaker said, “it looked like a perfect storm in a bad way.”
After a nearly 45 minute discussion, Commissioners took no formal action because they wanted to gather additional information.
