COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Branch County Clerk Terry Kubasiak said in her annual report that was accepted by the Board of Commissioners on Tuesday that the number of Concealed Weapons Permits that were approved in 2021 decreased compared to figures from 2020.
She said there were 850 permits issued last year through the Clerk’s Office compared to 1,044 in 2020.
Over 300 more permits were issued in 2020 than in 2019.
The Clerk’s Office bought equipment in 2021 and began taking fingerprints in their office for CPL applicants. Kubasiak says this has worked out well for customers, as it saves a trip to the Sheriff’s department to get prints done.
The Michigan State Police is responsible for performing the background check on the applicant. There is no local law enforcement review.
The Clerk’s report also showed the number of Branch County deaths have increased every year in the last five from 343 in 2017 to 429 in 2021.
Births dropped from 318 in 2020 to 284 last year. Divorces went down from 182 in 2020 to 153 last year while the number of marriage licenses filed was about the same.
The number of criminal cases filed in the court system went down from 340 in 2020 to 300 in 2021.
Kubasiak also reported her office was able to complete the 10 year effort of scanning of all of their vital records dating back to 1833. The thousands of the paper copies were sent to the Vital Records office in Lansing.
