COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Branch County Board of Commissioners voted during their Thursday work session to bring forward to next week’s meeting a resolution which establishes the Lake George lake level assessment roll.
Drain Commissioner and Department of Public Works Director Michael Hard conducted a public hearing on August 20.
The Branch County Drain Commissioner is responsible for maintaining the lake level of Lake George which covers two counties as well as two states.
The Branch County Circuit Court has established a special assessment district for the lake.
The Commissioners approved a resolution in May of 2021 for an interlocal agreement on the lake level of Lake George.
The Branch County Circuit Court entered a lake level order almost two years ago for the Michigan portion of Lake George that would match the level established on the Indiana side of the lake.
A Michigan special assessment district for lake level improvements was also created by the order.
The resolution recognizes the Branch County Drain Commissioner as the “delegated authority” and allows him to work with the Indiana special assessment district to maintain Lake George’s lake level.
The legal lake level was the last step in the process involving the states of Michigan and Indiana in order to fund repairs to the Lake George dam that was built in 1927 on the Indiana side of the lake.
