ATHENS TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – The identities of three teenagers from the Union City/Athens area who were injured Monday morning in a two vehicle Calhoun County crash have been released by the Michigan State Police.
17-year-old Bailey Mears of Union City was critically injured. He was flown by Samaritan Air Care to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo.
The other two teens, 18-year-old Jacob Todd of Union City and 18-year-old Cody Rice of Athens, were taken to Bronson Hospital by LifeCare Ambulance with minor injuries. The driver of the other car, 47-year-old David Byrd Union City, was treated and released at the scene.
Troopers say Byrd did not see the teenagers’ car as it crested a hill. The collision took place as Byrd was trying to make a left turn onto N Drive South from Six Mile Road.
The collision sent the teens’ car off the road and into many trees. At least one teen was ejected.
The crash remains under investigation.
The youngsters all attend Union City High School and were returning to the school after attending classes at the Calhoun Area Career Center.
