COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency Board of Health approved $5,000 in merit pay for Health Officer Rebecca Burns on Thursday and scheduled contract negotiations to take place next month.
Thursday’s action came following a closed session.
The merit pay was part of the current contract with Burns. It gave the Board the option to award it upon a satisfactory evaluation.
Her current one year contract expires at the end of December.
The board on Thursday also decided to send contract negotiations to their three member Health Program, Policy, and Appeals Committee which will then make a recommendation to the full board.
Burns was given a one year contract extension by the Health Board last December instead of the three years she was requesting after the board conducted her yearly evaluation in a closed session for almost an hour-and-a-half.
It was approved on a 5-1 vote with Commissioner Brent Leininger of Hillsdale County voting no.
There was a lot of strong reaction from the public to actions taken by Burns during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
While some felt she overreached her authority during the pandemic and was not honest, others felt she was just doing her job.
