COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – On a 5-3 roll call vote, with one abstention, the Coldwater City Council introduced an ordinance to amend the city’s Zoning Ordinance to allow electronic signs in the C-2 Central Business District zoning area on Monday night.
They would have to be monument signs, be no more than 6 ft tall and no more than 18 square feet in size, and be restricted to properties with yards or private parking areas, in addition to the existing restrictions on brightness.
The Tibbits Opera House is seeking to install an electronic sign near the historic landmark to advertise upcoming events.
The ordinance that City Council is considering is unchanged from the version that the City Planning Commission turned down on a 5-2 vote last February.
In January, the Downtown Historic District Commission voted 3-1 to recommend not approving the proposed change, while the Downtown Development Authority voted unanimously to recommend approving the change.
