COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Two obstructing police officer charges have been filed against a man who was told by Branch County Sheriff’s Deputies to stay away from a structure on his Burch Road property last Thursday that was being torn down according to an order from Coldwater Township.
57-year-old Christopher Coscarelly was arraigned on October 14 in Branch County District Court and released on a $5,000 personal recognizance bond.
A probable cause hearing was scheduled for October 27 with a preliminary exam set for November 3.
As a condition of the bond, he was ordered to stay at least 100 feet away from the workers or the building being demolished after it was alleged he set it on fire last Thursday.
According to Branch County court documents, the demolished building at the center of a dispute between Coscarelly and the township was set on fire after Sheriff’s deputies left.
When deputies returned, they found Coscarelly parked in a vehicle.
Branch County court documents state while the structure was burning, explosions were heard from propane tanks inside along with possible ammunition.
Coldwater firefighters had to be called in to put the fire out. The structure is described a two story hut with no utilities.
Magistrate Valarie White issued an order for demolition of the building back on May 2.
