COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The flipping of the former Gillespie Funeral Home on Marshall Street in Coldwater into a seven unit apartment dwelling that will be known “Southern Flats” continues.
Branch County Economic Development Corporation Director Lisa Miller told the Downtown Development Authority Board on Wednesday that current plans call for a project completion sometime after the first of the year.
Crews have been very busy over the last several months.
The Michigan Strategic Fund approved a $750,000 Michigan Community Revitalization Program performance-based grant in support of the project back in July.
In addition, the Downtown Development Authority approved a $10,000 façade grant and a 12-year Obsolete Property Rehabilitation Act tax abatement with an estimated value of over $149,000.
The property is owned by Southern Michigan Bank & Trust. The building which housed the former funeral home was built in 1920.
It’s estimated the entire project to rehabilitate the building and improve the surrounding property involved a total capital investment of over $1-point-8 million.
