COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Union City man who was wanted in four other counties was arraigned on Monday in Branch County District Court for allegedly using counterfeit money to buy a remote control car.
40-year-old Jim Lee Correnti was charged with uttering or publishing counterfeit bills or notes following an investigation by Union City Police.
Branch County Prosecutors also filed a habitual offender sentencing enhancer against him should he be convicted.
Branch County court documents state Correnti has convictions between 2008 and 2013 for stealing or retaining without consent, unarmed robbery and assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder or by strangulation.
Documents allege Correnti used counterfeit $100 and $50 bills in January of 2021 to purchase the remote control car which cost a total of $174.
The manager of a local bank inspected the bills and said they had signs that they were counterfeit and that it was immediately obvious the bills were fake.
A spokesperson at the Branch County Jail said there were holds for Correnti from Calhoun County for contempt of court as well as from St. Joseph County for failure to appear on a passing counterfeit bills charge, out of Jackson County for fraud and out of Allegan County for failure to appear for possession of amphetamines.
Bond was set at $10,000. A probable cause hearing was set for November 10 with a preliminary exam scheduled for November 15.
