PARMA, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater picked up a 28-14 win at Parma Western to spoil the Panthers’ homecoming and keep pace with undefeated Harper Creek in the Interstate 8 standings. The Cardinals won despite Western’s 272-215 edge in total yardage. The Panthers were penalized 8 times for 75 yards, many times killing scoring drives at inopportune times, compared with just 2 infractions for the Cards for 30 yards. Our McDonald’s Player of the Game, Sam DeMeester, had 22 carries for 111 yards and a touchdown along with 2 receptions for 23 yards; he also led the defense with 14 total tackles. Eric Bach was 4-for-4 passing for 54 yards and 2 touchdowns, on a 19-yard pass to Jaden Coney and a 12-yard strike to Brady Beckhusen. Bach also had a rushing touchdown. Defensively, Nathan Spray had 9 tackles, including a pair of sacks, and Logan Fee added 8. Coldwater improves to 3-1 overall, 2-1 in the Interstate 8, one game back of Harper Creek and tied for 2nd with Lumen Christi and Marshall.

Quincy accumulated 406 yards of total offense, 325 on the ground, as they remained undefeated on the season with a 34-22 win at cross-county rival Union City. The Chargers, for their part, collected 340 yards of total offense but just 162 on the ground. Ryan Gibson led the Orioles with 115 yards on 23 carries and 3 touchdowns, while Bryce Ruhl had 5 receptions for 76 yards and 2 touchdowns along with 15 carries for 93 yards. Nathan Karney was 4-for-11 passing for 81 yards. Adam Santi had 17 total tackles to lead the defense, and Kyle Locke had 10 as Quincy improves to 4-0 overall, 3-0 in the Big 8. For Union City, Josh Watson was 10-for-17 passing for 168 yards, 1 touchdown, and an interception. Elijah Harris had 10 carries for 62 yards and 3 receptions for 52 yards, Austin Mosher had 10 carries for 16 yards and a score, Deacon Dey had 5 carries for 26 yards and a rushing touchdown, 2 receptions for 4 yards and a receiving score, and led the defense with 10 tackles. Gavin Hooker added 2 receptions for 68 yards as the Chargers slip to 2-2 overall, 1-2 in the Big 8.

Bronson is still looking for their first win of the season as they drop to 0-4 with a 26-16 loss at Comstock. The score stands in marked contrast to last year’s showdown against the Colts, which the Vikings won 65-53. In fact, no points were scored during the second half. Bryce Withington had 7 tackles to lead the Bronson defense, while Chase Gibson added 6.
In 8-man football, Tekonsha fell to 1-3 after getting shut out by visiting Portland St. Patrick 39-0.

Coldwater’s boys cross country team ran to a third place finish in the Bronze Division of the Spartan Invitational at MSU’s Forest Akers East Golf Course. Individually, Shuaib Aljabaly won the race with a time of 16:02, while Zack Murphy placed 12th, Jordan Parkinson 27th, Jacob Fair 42nd, and Ayash Ahmed 101st. Ben Fagen ran to a 5th place finish in the JV-2 boys race. The Cardinal girls finished 27th in the Girls Bronze Division, paced by Kathy Potter’s 57th place finish.
GIRLS GOLF
Coldwater hosted the 16-team Lady Cardinal Invitational at the Coldwater Golf Course. Coldwater’s Red team placed 9th with a team score of 401, while the Cardinals’ White team placed 14th with a 464. For the Red team, Jayla Goodwin shot a 96, Hunter Jenkot 98, Claire Sheppard 103, and Molly Smith 104. Abigail Coffing paced the White team with a round of 112, with a 115 for Ryleigh Collins, 117 for Avery Volkmer, and 120 for Elloree Madden. St. Joseph won the tournament with a team score of 342, and the Bears’ Cailey Rooker won medalist honors with her round of 72.
