READING, MI (WTVB) – Reading High School students had to be sent home on Tuesday after the Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Department says a student had sprayed Mace which is commonly known as pepper spray or a similar chemical irritant from a key chain.
Officials at the high school notified the Sheriff’s Office that they had evacuated the school.
When deputies arrived, they were told that an unknown substance was causing breathing difficulties for some staff and students.
Reading Schools Superintendent Chuck North decided to cancel classes for the rest of the day to clear the building of the lingering smell.
The Sheriff’s Department along with Reading Schools Administrators continue to investigate the incident.
No students or staff required medical attention.
The staff went back into the building after the students were sent home.
