COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Branch County will get a taste of the region’s first winter storm today and tonight. It is included in a Winter Weather Advisory issued by the National Weather Service that will go in effect at 1 p.m. this afternoon and last until 7 a.m. Sunday morning. The National Weather Service Office in North Webster, Indiana is predicting total snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches and wind gusts up to 40 mph in the advisory area, which includes St. Joseph and LaGrange Counties but not Hillsdale and Steuben Counties.
Meanwhile, Winter Storm Warnings continue for more than a dozen counties to our north and west, including Calhoun and Kalamazoo Counties, until 7 a.m. Sunday. National Weather Service meteorologists say this could rank among the highest three-day snowfall totals for November. Forecasters are calling for another six inches to a foot of new snow by Sunday morning.
Michigan State Police reports a raft of freeway crashes as heavy snow blanketed West Michigan roadways Friday. MSP says roads are icy and slushy. Around two-dozen cars were involved in a pileup on southbound US-131 near Alamo Township just before 5 p.m. Forty-five minutes earlier, a multi-vehicle crash on northbound US-131 north of Kalamazoo choked off traffic for more than two hours.
