COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Marshall scored 17 unanswered points on Thursday night as they defeated Coldwater 17-7 in the Interstate 8 Conference opener for both teams.
The Cardinals got their only touchdown of the night early in the second quarter when Sam Demeester scored from 23 yards out. A one yard touchdown by Marshall’s Brad Heidenreich tied the game at 7-7. Tyler Denbrock put the Red Hawks ahead for good with a 32 yard field goal late in the third quarter.
The Red Hawks special teams came through again early in the fourth quarter when Corey Dexter recovered a fumbled snap on a punt attempt for a touchdown.
Demeester rushed for 109 yards on 22 carries. The Cardinals lost despite having the edge in the final statistics including total yards, 242-155. Coldwater is now 1-1. They will play at Battle Creek Pennfield next Friday night.
Union City 54, Athens 18
The Little Brown Jug stays in Union City for a 16th straight year and perhaps for awhile. It what could be the last matchup between two long time rivals, the Union City Chargers rushed for 392 yards and defeated archrival Athens 54-18. Athens is leaving the Big 8 Conference and there has been talk they will switch to eight man football. Elijah Harris rushed for 174 yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback Josh Watson scored from 72 yards out and threw a six yard touchdown to Austin Mosher as the Chargers improved to 2-0.
Quincy 42, Jonesville 40 (OT)
Ryan Gibson scored from a yard out and then scored on a two point conversion as the Quincy Orioles defeated the Jonesville Comets 42-40 in an overtime thriller in Quincy. Gibson and Bryce Ruhl each scored a pair of touchdowns. Three Orioles went over 100 yards rushing. Ruhl had 153 yards, Gibson 126 and Nathan Karney rushed for 103 yards. The two teams combined for over 900 yards of offense. Quincy had 410 yards of their total offense of 443 yards on the grounds. The Orioles are now 2-0.
Bridgman 33, Bronson 8
A tough night for the Vikings as they lost their conference opener and dropped to 0-2. Dilan Rissman had 12 tackles on defense including three for loss.
In eight man football, Webberville defeated Tekonsha 30-14 as the Indians record drops to 0-2.
