BRONSON, MI (WTVB) – There are more questions than answers right now following the discovery of a body in Cary Lake on Monday. The Branch County Sheriff’s Department is conducting a criminal investigation into the matter.
No news release has been issued by the department but they have informed media outlets that the body was identified as 41-year-old Jonathon McGuire of Bronson.
Undersheriff Keith Eichler says a man came into the Sheriff’s Department on Monday morning to report an accident at the public access site on the north side of the lake which had apparently taken place during the wee hours of Monday morning. The man was apparently a passenger in the car which crashed into the lake at about 1:00 a.m. or 2:00 a.m.
It was dispatched at 8:39 a.m. as a personal injury accident. The Sheriff’s Department Dive Team was dispatched at 9:58 a.m.
McGuire’s body was recovered about two hours later from an upside down convertible which was submerged in three feet of water.
Yellow crime tape was stretched across the entrance to the access site just after 1:00 p.m.
WWMT-TV reports the car was pulled from the lake at about 6:00 p.m.
The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation. An autopsy is planned but it could be at least a month before results from toxicology tests are known.
