BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – A second half rally by the Coldwater Cardinals fell short on Friday night as they lost their Interstate 8 Conference opener at Hastings 51-47.
Coldwater trailed 32-19 at halftime but got the margin down to nine points after three quarters, 41-32.
Hastings managed to get the lead back to 13 points midway through the final quarter. They had to hold off one last Cardinal charge in the final minutes as the Saxons earned their second win of the season.
Zach Coffing led the Cardinals with 15 points and six rebounds. Donte Work had 14 points and 12 rebounds. Coldwater is now 1-1 overall.

Meanwhile, Union City dropped a tightly contested game at Mendon 44-42 which was the same score as the girls contest played between the two schools on November 29.
The Chargers had a chance to pull out the victory in the non-conference game but a three point shot from the top of the key hit the rim in the final seconds.
Landon Galvin led the Chargers with 10 points. Union City is now 1-1.
