COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Branch County Board of Commissioners are scheduled to decide on Thursday if they will take a position on the proposed Michigan D.N.R. reclassification of the Prairie River west of Bronson to the county line from a warm stream to a cold transitional stream.
Commissioners heard comments on both sides of the issue during their final meetings of 2022.
Aaron Rice from Rice Well Drilling is part of a group opposed to the change. He told Commissioners on December 15 that the reclassification of the river could impact irrigation and land levels in much of Branch County.
Representatives from the Michigan D.N.R. and the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy attended the next Commissioners meeting on December 20.
Jay Westley from the Fisheries Division of the D.N.R. said they want to change the stream from warm to cold due to the Brown Trout population.
The Michigan D.N.R. is scheduled to make a decision on the reclassification on January 12, 2023.
