MATTAWAN, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater High School graduate Alicia Smith was recently inducted into the Michigan High School Softball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
Smith has coached at Mattawan High School since 1998. She spent three seasons as the J.V. coach before becoming the varsity coach in 2001.
Her teams have won 556 games over the years which includes two state championships and five conference crowns.
Under Smith’s guidance, Mattawan has won 12 district titles and eight regional championships. The latest regional title came last June when Mattawan scored a dramatic 4-2 comeback victory over Coldwater when the Cardinals were one strike away from victory in the finals.
Smith has also been named the Detroit Free Press Coach of the Year and has been named Regional coach of the year eight times and District coach of the year 12 times.
Smith was an outstanding athlete in softball and basketball at Coldwater High School during the early 90s. She is still second on the all time Coldwater girls basketball list for season field goal percentage when she hit 54 percent of her shots during the 1992 season.
After graduating from Coldwater High School, Smith attended Western Michigan University where she played softball.
