BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB/WNWN) – Calhoun County has experienced a surge in the number of new COVID-19 cases over the last three weeks.
The Calhoun County Public Health Department says as of Wednesday, there have been 1,503 cases reported since the pandemic began with 211 new cases reported since September 30.
The department reports the increase is primarily caused by community spread through large gatherings.
According to data from the State of Michigan, as of October 4 the seven-day average percentage of positive test results in Calhoun County was 5.5 percent.
That percentage is down from a recent spike to 6.4 percent which took place on October 2 but is still a 1.7 percent increase in the number of positive test results from a week ago in Calhoun County.
The city of Battle Creek reported this week that three city firefighters and one staff member at the wastewater treatment plant tested positive for COVID-19 which brought the number of confirmed cases within the city’s workforce since March up to 14.
The four city staff members are currently recovering at home.
