Carl J. Walker, 85, of Quincy, formerly of Bronson and Sherwood, passed away Thursday, October 8, 2020.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, October 17, 2020 at the United Methodist Church in Union City, with visitation starting at 12:00 PM, just prior to the service. Interment will follow at Matteson Township Cemetery.
Carl was born September 10, 1935 in Bronson Township, Michigan to Lester and Nettie (Warner) Walker. He grew up in Bronson, where he played football and participated in boxing. He graduated from Bronson High School in 1954 and went on to serve in the U.S. Army as an infantryman from 1959-1961, stationed in Korea and Germany. Upon his return to Branch County, Carl went to trade school to became a tool and die maker.
He was employed by L.A. Darling, G & W Display and Geiger Manufacturing, all in Bronson. On December 13, 1963, he married the former Betty Lou Castle in Bronson, but that union ended in divorce. He later married Gail Dentler on November 26, 1983 in Sherwood. She survives him.
Carl was a very gentle and loving man. He always took the time to listen. He believed in the good in everyone. He loved to tell stories and used them to teach things. Carl was fun-loving and laughed easily. He actively helped with the Boy Scouts and their camping excursions.
Carl was also an animal lover. He raised cattle and horses and became a member of the Branch County Sheriff Posse. He was also a member of the Colon American Legion and the Union City United Methodist Church. Around home Carl enjoyed cooking and coming up with his own recipes, including a very special apple pie recipe. Family meant everything to him and he made sure they knew it.
Left to cherish Carl’s loving legacy are his wife of 36 years, Gail; his daughters, Debbie (Rod) Francisco of Plainwell and Janet (Kirk) Briggs of Kalamazoo; a step-son, Lee Dentler of Wichita, KS; his sister, Candy (Tim) Minor of Sherwood; his former wife, Betty Lou Kern; step-grandchildren, Zach (Anna) Francisco; Katy (Adam) Herrera, Caleb (Michaela) Francisco, Patrice Ewers, Loree Cunningham and Terrance Marble; step-great-grandchildren, Eliana Herrera, Isaac Francisco, Lija Francisco and Julian VanWormer; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his step-daughter, Heather Young; his siblings, Clark Walker, Clare Walker and Norma May Pierson; and a nephew, Michael Pierson.
