BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB) – The boys basketball season for the Coldwater Cardinals came to a sudden conclusion on Monday night as they were stunned by the Harper Creek Beavers 44-39 in the opening round of the MHSAA Division 1 District tournament at Battle Creek Central.
Coldwater beat Harper Creek twice during the regular season on their way to a co-championship of the Interstate 8. But things can be different in the month of March.
Monday’s game was close throughout as the Cardinals had to deal with foul issues throughout the contest.
After the game was tied 18-18 at the half and 28-28 after the third quarter, Harper Creek used 16-11 fourth quarter to pull off the upset.
Niko Downs led Coldwater with nine points and two assists. Ayden Dirschell added eight points. Donte Work grabbed seven rebounds.
The Cardinals finished 14-9. The Beavers will take a 9-14 record into Wednesday’s semifinal encounter with archrival Battle Creek Lakeview.

In the other opening round game at Battle Creek Central on Monday night, Gull Lake ended the season for Sturgis as they humbled the Trojans 63-30.
Gull Lake will play the host Battle Creek Central Bearcats on Wednesday night.
