FREMONT, IN (WTVB) – A man and wife from Wimberly, Texas were killed late Tuesday afternoon in a crash on southbound I-69 about two miles south of the Pokagon State Park exit in Steuben County.
The Steuben County Sheriff’s Department says the accident happened at 5:13 p.m. in the area of the 352 mile marker and it involved a pickup truck pulling a 30 foot camper travel trailer.
Witnesses say the vehicle was going around a curve when the travel trailer started to sway back and forth. Investigators say it appears the driver, 71-year-old Jimmy D. Hord, overcorrected causing the pickup and trailer to slide sideways and then roll over in the median.
Hord was ejected from the vehicle while his 67-year-old wife Sherry was pinned in the vehicle. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
I-69 was shut down on the southbound side for over two hours while the crash was being investigated. The northbound side was closed for 45 minutes.
Backups on the southbound stretched almost to the state line during the early evening hours. The accident is still under investigation.
