COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Branch County Board of Commissioners voted during their work session on Thursday to bring a request from Sheriff John Pollack forward to hire a former employee to fill one of the Sheriff Department’s two open positions after the recent retirements of Sergeants Frank Barker and Mike Gatke.
Pollack said they would start the applicant at the three year road patrol pay level of just over $26,800 which would be a nearly $2,700 increase over the first year pay level.
Pollack said he worked at the department over a decade ago and the Sheriff made the pay request because outside of a department corrections officer, there were no other applicants.
The Sheriff also felt hiring someone with department experience would help.
Meanwhile, the road patrol applicant out of the Corrections Department will be sent to a Law Enforcement Academy. Pollack said the Sheriff’s Department has applied for a state grant to pay for the training.
In other business, the Commissioners decided to move next week’s regular meeting to Monday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. in order to meet a deadline to submit a broadband grant application to the State of Michigan.
