COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Donte Work was voted by his teammates as Most Valuable Player for the Coldwater Cardinal boys basketball team during their team banquet Wednesday at the Coldwater Golf Course.
Other awards that were voted on by team members include:
- Most Improved Player (tie): Gavin Taylor, Elijah Sloan
- Best Defensive Player: Ayden Dirschell
- Leadership Award: Donte Work
- Scout Team/Bench Player: Steven Covell
- Hustle Award: Jack Ruden
- Dedication Award: Niko Downs
- Most Sportsmanlike: Steven Covell
Work wrapped up his high school career fifth in the school record books for season rebounds; his 202 boards in 23 games works out to an average of 8.78 rebounds per game. Fellow senior Elijah Sloan made 36 three-point baskets this season, putting him seventh on the season list. And sophomore Ayden Dirschell is eighth on the season steals list with a 2.39 steals per game average, or 55 steals in 23 games.
In addition to the previously announced Interstate 8 All-Conference honors for Work and Dirschell and All-Conference Honorable Mention for Zach Coffing, seven players were named Academic All-Conference: Steven Covell, Ayden Dirschell, Niko Downs, Celian Imberti, Jack Ruden, Elijah Sloan, and Gavin Taylor.
After a 1-5 start to the 2022-23 season, the Cardinals came back to finish 14-9. For the second straight year, they shared the Interstate 8 title with Marshall.
