UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – Union City School Superintendent Chris Katz says work on a bleacher project at Union City High School’s Alumni Field will take place this summer.
The project had to be delayed for a year after no contractor bids for many portions of the project were not received before a deadline of June 1, 2022.
Katz acknowledged builders had so much in place they were not interested in the Union City. But all of the contractors are now in place for this summer’s work.
Construction is set to start in early May. Union City High School graduate Ryan Nagel and his company, Nagel Excavating, will begin the project by removing the existing concrete and bleachers and prepare the location for the new bleachers.
The project will include new concrete bleachers with aluminum benches at the current site along with a new building with bathrooms on the east side of the press box.
Katz says in this months district news letter that the entire area will be safer with level concrete surfaces and steps instead of a steep grade.
The old bleachers are warping and the dirt supporting them is gradually washing out down the hill to the track.
Union City Community School District voters approved a sinking fund millage renewal proposal in August of 2021 which provided a portion of the funding for the replacement of the bleachers as well as for other projects in the district.
