BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – Branch County did not fare very well in a survey just released by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute.
The results showed Branch County was the 57th healthiest county of the 83 counties in the State of Michigan.
Researchers assembling the 2023 County Health Rankings and Road Map list a number of factors such as length and quality of life, access and quality of clinical care and individual health behaviors.
They found compared to the rest of the state and the country, Branch County residents are fatter, don’t exercise enough and they smoke to much.
The survey found that 16 percent of Branch County residents are in poor or fair health, 23 percent of adults smoke, 38 percent are obese while 23 percent are inactive physically.
It also found that 36 percent of driving deaths in Branch County were alcohol-impaired.
All of those numbers are above percentages for the rest of Michigan and the country.
Leelanau County was ranked as the healthiest county in Michigan followed by Clinton, Ottawa, Livingston and Oakland Counties.
The five worst counties in Michigan for health were Wayne, Genesee, Lake, Iron and Iosco.
