QUINCY, MI (WTVB) – A woman whose life was saved by Quincy firefighters on September 7, 2022 when a fire broke out in a apartment building at U.S. 12 and Arnold paid a visit to the Quincy fire house on Wednesday night.
The Quincy Fire Department posted on their Facebook page that Melody Cole was not breathing when firefighters removed her from her apartment but they were able to get a pulse back and she started to breath on her own after a couple rounds of CPR.
Cole was taken to ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital by Life Care Ambulance and later flown to Kalamazoo for further treatment. She spent several weeks in ICU recovering from significant smoke inhalation and then fought her way through rehabilitation.
Cole is still in the process of healing but is said to be doing very well.
Quincy firefighters just happened to be at the right place at the right time when the fire was reported at 6:46 p.m. that evening as they were in the middle of a training drill at the firehouse.
Crews arrived on the scene within three minutes of the alarm. They found smoke showing from the single story multi-family dwelling.
Crews forced open the apartment door and quickly found Cole within the thick smoke. The fire was quickly knocked down and kept to the apartment of origin. US-12 was closed for the duration of the fire as supply hoses were stretched across the roadway.
