COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A laptop full of customer data has been stolen from an employee at Southern Michigan Bank and Trust.
The bank is taking steps to protect customers, even though they aren’t sure the theft has resulted in a data breach.
The laptop was taken weeks ago from a bank employee’s car. They aren’t sure the thief is aware what was on the machine.
The information was password protected, and there has been no evidence that the data has been misused so far. The bank is issuing new debit cards to the effected customers, picking up the cost of identity theft insurance and will provide credit monitoring.
The bank is based in Coldwater but has branches throughout the region.
