COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – It was a milestone night for Coldwater High School baseball coach Randy Spangler as he picked up his 700th career victory.
Number 700 for the old left hander from Reading came in the opening game of a doubleheader against the Three Rivers Wildcats as the Cardinals posted a 6-3 victory. Coldwater swept the doubleheader by winning the nightcap 8-5.
Spangler began coaching the Coldwater High School baseball team in 1989. His teams have enjoyed winning seasons in 23 of his 35 years.
During that time, the Coldwater Baseball Team has won six league championships, 12 District championships and two Regional titles.
In 1997 and 2013, Spangler was voted as the Regional Coach of the Year and was the M.H.S.A.A. Class “B” Coach of the Year in ’97.
Spangler was elected into the Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2010.
As for the Cardinals sweep of the Wildcats, Cam Heinemann was the winning pitcher in the opener while Garrett Johns earned the save. Drake Thornton homered while Brady Massey had two doubles and Garrett Johns had a pair of hits.
Johns had the big stick in the nightcap as he blasted a pair of home runs and drove in four runs. Ian Stough had a double and two RBIs. Cole Heinemann was the winning pitcher. Massey earned the save.
The Cardinals evened their record at 8-8.
