(STEUBEN COUNTY, IN)- A Chicago man died on Monday in a crash on the Indiana Toll Road just west of I-69 which shut down the eastbound lanes of the Toll Road for about two hours.
The Indiana State Police and the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department responded to the two vehicle crash at about noon.
A preliminary crash investigation found that a Buick LaCrosse was traveling west on I-80/90 near the 143 mile marker when for an unknown reason, it veered off the road. It then crossed through the grass median and entered the eastbound lane where it crashed head on into a Dodge Ram truck.
The driver of Buick LaCrosse, later identified as 33-year-old Jesse Charles Cox, was found to be unresponsive and appeared fatally injured. A nurse that was passing by stopped to aid officers in rendering medical assistance, but efforts were unsuccessful. Cox was pronounced dead at the scene by the Steuben County Coroner.
Two Ohio men in the pickup truck were transported from the scene by ambulance to a Fort Wayne hospital for treatment.
Eastbound traffic was diverted off of the Toll Road at the State Road 9 exit during the shutdown to reduce the lengthy traffic backup. All lanes of travel were reopened at about 2:30 p.m..
The crash remains under investigation by the Indiana State Police.
